The Selmer MKVII came hot on the heels of the classic and revered MKVI in the mid 1970's. The layout is slightly different under the hands and it feels very much like any modern Saxophone today, yet with elements of that vintage Selmer sound.
This sax was made in 1980, it belonged to the Ghana Navy Band, and it was one of a number of instruments being replaced by the band in the mid 1990's. it was sold to a UK diplomat posted in Ghana at the time, subsequently moving to Zambia. It was brought back to the UK in 2013 and remained unused until being completely overhauled by Dawkes. The lacquer has completely gone, and it has developed a gorgeous dark patina naturally over the course of many years. Dawkes have provided a couple of replacement parts (the missing neck screw and a guard), and we have left these parts in their gold lacquer, we think this gives a really cool “kintsugi” effect where the new parts are distinct from the rest of the storied instrument.
Like all Selmer MKVII's this tenor has a rich, full and fruity sound. For many years the MKVII lived in the shadow of its predecessor, the famous MKVI, but since the mid 2000's we've seen a huge renaissance in players wanting the MKVII sound, playability, intonation improvements and reliability.
In summary, this is a great blowing example of these classic models. We think this Sax competes very favourably against any of the new models on the market you could buy at this price point. The Sax comes complete with a hard case, but please note: no mouthpiece is supplied. As we’ve re-padded and completely overhauled this instrument, we are really pleased to be able to offer it with a 6 month secondhand warranty.
