This is a great condition pre-owned Yamaha YAS-875 Custom Alto Saxophone that has benefitted from a Premium Dawkes Set-Up (more on that below). The Custom 875 model is ideal for the advancing player or serious professional, it is handmade in the famous Hamamatsu factory in Japan at Yamaha HQ. Only the most experienced artisans are permitted to work on these Custom models which results in the finest possible quality.

Premium Set-Up Work

We select certain pro models for our ‘Premium Set-Up’ whereby we give free reign to our experienced technicians and ask them to inject some unique touches into these instruments. In this instance we have made some material and finishing selections which both modify the look and feel as well as the tonal qualities of this amazing Sax.

We've chosen to re-pad the instrument fully with the MusicMedic black Sax Gourmet RooPads with the Maestro Star Classic gold-plated solid brass resonators. The RooPads offer ‘stick-free’ lifetime performance and offer a very quiet yet positive feel under the fingers. The brass resonators give a little bit of liveliness to the tonal response.

We thought it would be aesthetically appealing to carry the black theme throughout the set-up and as such we've fitted some custom black stones to the keys in place of the regular Pearls. Not only do these black stones look cool, they also feel more ‘grippy’ under the fingers add a little extra mass to the overall weight.

Black ultra-suede material has also been used in place of the usual Yamaha crimson material as a regulating material under the keywork. Not only does the black ultra-suede match the aesthetic vibe, but we have found it both lasts longer and offers a quieter key action overall compared to the ‘stock’ Yamaha felt.

When it comes to the neck area of this Sax we've also made some aesthetic and mechanical improvements. Carrying on the theme of adding a little extra mass to the body we've chosen to fit a Yani BooStar heavyweight modular neck screw. This offers firstly a quick and accurate adjustment that holds, but also adds a little weight. 

To add a little balance in terms of tonal response we decided to fully strip the neck of its original lacquer and put it through an accelerated ageing process and finishing which gives a cool ‘aged’ look which matches the black/gold theme on this instrument. The unlacquered neck offers a certain brightness of response which compliments the heavier weight further down the instrument.

In Summary

This Yamaha Custom 875 started life as an excellent professional model already, and with our customisations we have brought it a new lease of life with a super-cool aesthetic and totally unique set-up. The instrument has some minor aesthetic wear as would be expected of any pre-owned model but it's more than ready to give it's next owner decades of hassle-free ownership.

Overhaul Type: All Black

The 'All Black' Premium Overhaul offers a stealthy and contemporary look to the instrument. The 'All Black' Overhaul uses black ultra-suede material by Music Medic which is an excellent silencing material. It is used on keys to reduce noise in the action, and it will not compress as readily as standard felt.

The 'All Black' Overhaul materials also include black felt sheet and bumpers where relevant to complete the black look. We also use Tech Cork to regulate certain areas of the instrument where it offers the most longevity.

Pad Type: SaxGourmet RooPads™

The SaxGourmet RooPads™ are a pro-grade black coloured Saxophone pad. They are made of a highly uniform and lightweight Kangaroo leather paired with the finest felt from Europe. These pads offer a consistent and positive feel under the fingers combined with excellent water-resistance and longevity.

They look great combined with our ‘All Black’ Premium Overhaul specification but can be used on other Premium Set-Up options.

Resonator Type: Maestro Star Classic - Gold Plated Brass

The Music Medic ‘Maestro Star Classic’ resonators offer enhanced resonance when compared to plastic or classic domed resonators due to the unique ridged design of the surface area. The pads on this instrument have been fitted with the Star Classic in Gold Plated Brass.
