Produced between 1931-1935 these models have taken on the 'Cigar Cutter' nomenclature because of the octave mechanism design which has a similar look to a cigar cutter of the age, however they were referred to as 'Super Sax' models by Selmer themselves.
This particular example is from 1932 and is in very nice overall condition. We suspect it has been re-lacquered in its past, with the rich gold lacquer in such superb condition. Playing quality is of course subjective but this feels pretty gorgeous to us, in line with how a good quality Cigar/Super should play with all those vintage Selmer features. A clean, sweet sound with projection and a certain quality that is quite different to a modern horn.
In summary this is a really excellent, authentic example of these classic Alto's. These models are still absolutely relevant for a modern player, usually more in the jazz genre than classical of course. The Super Series are very usable compared to the older Model 22 horns that now feel dated and hard work under the fingers, not so here.
