The Backun Story

Originally started in 2000 the Backun Company was the brainchild of woodwind specialist Morrie Backun. From its beginnings as a small family instrument repair shop the Backun name is recognised globally as specialists in all things Clarinet.

Many players first experiences with Backun were seeing their unique and characterful range of barrels and bells which exploded onto the market in the early 2000’s. These different looking accessories caused quite a stir with top players flocking to them for the benefits they added to their clarinet set-ups.

Since then, Backun have gone from strength to strength and expanded into all areas of Clarinet related manufacturing. They now offer an excellent range from student to professional models, all featuring unique developments that are inspired by players for players.

Why are Backun Different?

As mentioned, these relative newcomers have exploded into the Clarinet world. Many players and dealers may have assumed there was something 'fad-like' in the following that their barrels and bells generated but the Backun team put the hard miles in and applied their extensive playing and technical knowledge to produce a range of Clarinets which are both different from the rest and highly thought-out to assist players.

The Backun ethos is to deliver precision manufacturing, extraordinary craftsmanship and unparalleled customer service. We can attest to all these attributes, and it’s been a pleasure to work alongside Backun over the years as their brand has grown and grown. Fundamentally the success of any manufacturer comes down to whether their products can ‘do it’ and get the job done – there’s no issues on that front with Backun clarinets otherwise they wouldn’t still be here!

Their range of upgrade and professional wooden clarinets are made from exotic unstained woods which are ethically and sustainably sourced. All the manufacturing processes take place at their modern facility in Canada using the latest hi-tech computer-controlled machinery. All of which is overseen and enhanced by elements of hand-finishing and finessing on each model.

Backun Clarinet Models

The range starts out with the Alpha model which is a high-quality ABS body instrument specifically designed for beginners. This is lightweight, easy to play and rewarding for any new clarinet player.

After the Alpha model the range then proceeds into wooden instruments. A quality wooden clarinet offers the player a chance to produce a richer, fuller tone with more quality and projection. The Backun range begins with the Beta which is an ideal first upgrade for an advancing student of any age. This instrument would offer an enhanced tone compared to any student ABS body clarinet.

As we progress up the range, we find the Backun Protégé Clarinet which is available in a variety of woods with various key options and finishes. The Protégé model is a serious upgrade option and has proved to be exceptionally popular here at Dawkes Music. The wood quality is superb, and the instruments are made to extremely high standards.

After the Protégé series Backun offer the Q2, MoBa and Lumiere models in their professional range. The Q2 body is only available in Grenadilla but the MoBa and Lumiere can be purchased in Grenadilla or Cocobolo. So what’s the difference? Grenadilla generally has a slightly harder sound with added projection due to the nature of the wood. Whereas Cocobolo models offer a slightly broader, softer and sweeter tone across the range with less 'ping'.

Why Consider a Backun Clarinet?

In our opinion Backun Clarinets are at the forefront of modern manufacturing developments. Their automatic Low F vent mechanism is unmatched and works flawlessly to improve the low F intonation. The whole feel of their instruments is sublime and for any discerning player or advancing student a Backun Clarinet is a sensible choice to help them perform to their highest levels.
