The Backun Alpha clarinet is the result of years of research and development and the desire to give student clarinetists an affordable instrument that won’t be restrictive during their development. This is the model with silver plated keys and standard ABS barrel.
Made from a special synthetic material chosen for its excellent sonic capabilities and exceptional tone, the Alpha also gives professional players an instrument that they can confidently use for performances where a wooden instrument might not be appropriate.
And, with a special barrel, bell and bore design by Morrie Backun, the Alpha is sure to take you to the next level.

Good instrument, do not need too much care.
I'm not sure if one could ever select the perfect instrument ! The Backun Alpha is certainly enjoyable to play. I like the tone and the use of the keys is fine. The more expensive (wooden) option had "smoother" keys when playing it but I thought sounded very similar to the Backun Alpha.
A good, solid clarinet for playing outdoors. Consistent tuning throughout the registers
The Backun Alpha is my first clarinet, and I am extremely pleased with it! It is extremely easy to play and has a very beautiful sound.
I wanted a synthetic clarinet so I can play it outside. I didn't want a "cheap" instrument. The Backun Alpha almost matches the sound that I get on my wooden clarinet, although I found that my Vandoren mouthpiece and "Fatboy" barrel improved the sound. One feature that I like is the perfect tuning of the "long" Eb/Bb. I don't like the unprotected thumb rest though.
