The brand new Yamaha YDS-150 was designed to be a Saxophone that would allow anyone to experience the joy of performing, anytime, anywhere. This ground-breaking new wind instrument retains the full expressiveness of the Saxophone and adds convenience and ease due to the design.
Yamaha's patented Integrated Bell Acoustic System is a fusion of traditional Saxophone design and advanced digital technologies that offers the uniquely rich sound of an acoustic Saxophone while also allowing you to enjoy playing at a range of easily controllable volumes, and with a set of headphones to play in total silence around you.
The YDS-150 digital Saxophone comes with a traditional looking mouthpiece and synthetic reed, however it plays with much more immediate ease and simply requires blowing into to produce a beautiful Saxophone sound. The volume and tone can be adjusted by changing the intensity of your blowing.
The Sounds
The instrument uses sampled sounds of Yamaha's soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. There are 56 meticulously recorded saxophone voices including variations, plus there are an additional set of synthesised sounds to make a total of 73 instrument sounds overall.
The Layout
The Yamaha YDS-150 uses the same key layout, mouthpiece and thumb rest as an acoustic Saxophone to help deliver a natural and comfortable playing experience to new or experienced Saxophonists. It also features a real brass bell and is the same length as an acoustic Soprano Saxophone in order to offer exceptional balance and a lightweight feel.
The Development Process
The development of this revolutionary product has been years in the making. The goal was to produce a Saxophone that could be played more easily and more accessibly by players of any age and experience. The new YDS-150 digital Saxophone offers this to new players, and for the experienced player it can be an excellent addition to your kit for silent practice, electronic/synthesised music uses and much more.
Yamaha have released a firmware update to version 1.10 which unlocks the MIDI controller functionality of the instrument, as well as fixes some minor bugs.

The instrument itself is amazing and very cleverly designed. I would have found it useful for key-work practice to avoid having to setup my baritone sax time. However, I feel a 12-month guarantee isn’t long enough for such a delicate instrument, which may be susceptible to developing a fault or breaking down, even if that extended guarantee required an additional payment.
Easy to use, good quality as always by Yamaha.
Good service. Prompt response. Fare price.
The Yamaha YDS150 is an excellent digital saxophone. Really good for silent practice and actually good enough for professional perormance depending on the type of music as it's less expressive than a real reed instrument. Sounds far more realisitic than the built in sounds of the Akai EWI5000 and has the advantage of having keys exactly the same as a saxophone.
It does all I hoped it would
Excellent instrument. This will be used as a practice/silent saxophone option and the Yamaha YDS-150 fits this requirement brilliantly Currently being played using a USB power line from my PC, the YDS-150 app on an iPad (via Bluetooth) for settings tweaks, and an old 15w guitar amp I have (via a 3.5 Aux In/Phones cable) for when I need volume. Easy to set up and play. Buy one!
It\'s not a saxophone - it might take a bit of getting used to - but a good instrument none the less; good range of \'voices\' to suit all types of sax.
Excellent practice tool.Ergonomics very similar to regular saxophone.
Early to say, bitty first impressions good.
I’d recommend the Yamaha YDS 150 to anyone who wants to practice without annoying other housemates or neighbours. I’ve previously owned EWI and Roland digital instrument and this is far superior for those who want a true saxophone feel. The sax sounds are particularly impressive. All top notch!!
