This Optimum series is hailed as a great success, winning approval from players in all genres of music. They are often tried and compared against the Selmer S80 series, Selmer Concept and Vandoren Profile models.
There are 3 models within the Optimum Alto Sax mouthpiece range as described below:
The AL3 is primarily chosen by grade players and more classical users wanting a good all round mouthpiece with a closer facing that suits harder reeds. Very popular and easy to play. Tip Opening: 152 (1/100mm) | Facing Length: Medium Long
The AL4 is a little more open than the AL3 but with a shorter facing length which does make it feel quite different. Less concentrated in tone with a broader sound. Tip Opening: 163.1 (1/100mm) | Facing Length: Medium Short
The AL5 feels more like the AL3 in how it blows because they share the same facing length design. However the more open tip on the AL5 means it offers extra projection but with a broader sound that needs more flexible control. Tip Opening: 168 (1/100mm) | Facing Length: Medium Long

Harder to use than Selmer S80
The supplier responded:Dear customer, Thank you for your feedback on this mouthpiece. The Vandoren Optimum is a popular option however we do often find differences between each mouthpiece which can be particularly apparent if you are trying a different tip opening. I would also suggest trying a few different reed or ligature options as you may hit upon a feel and sound that you prefer to your current set-up. Kind regards, Kasey Stone - Dawkes Sales
Returned as my son kept the Selmer S80 which was easier to play overall. But this Vandoren is good quality and the decision is subjective.
