The Selmer Supreme Alto Saxophone is the latest addition to the Selmer stable, and it enters at the top of the list. Designed to transcend other makes and models, the Supreme is aiming to be the pinnacle of Saxophone production and is inspired by over 100 years of Saxophone making heritage from the worlds most famous Sax manufacturer.
The Selmer Supreme Story
The result of 8 years of research, design and development. The Supreme has been built from the ground up, with the Selmer team and their associated professional musicians finessing every last detail. From the key angles, to the tone hole positioning and sizes, all the way down to the neck screw mechanism. This is no re-design of a previous model, it's a brand new design for a new century in the Selmer company's history.
Technical Developments
1. Acoustics:
The sound of the Supreme has been designed to offer a perfect balanced between roundness and rich sonority. It has unprecedented flexibly across the whole range and a broad projection. Technical changes to facilitate these aspects have been:
A brand new neck bore design
Reduction of the low Bb and B key cup diameters
New height reference for all keys
Modified diameters and locations of tone holes
New bore through the bell section
2. Ergonomics & Mechanics:
There have been many changes and modifications to the standard Selmer key layout principles of years gone by:
3-point concentric clamp for a better neck-to-body connection
This clamp is made of nickel silver to add density to this important nodal point of the Saxophone
The clamp is disassociated from the socket which makes it possible to adjust its position
Direct arm between the right hand F# and F keys for a finer adjustment
Octave key system includes Teflon inside for longer durability
New front F key design that is more easily accessible
A lighter C# correction system
Redesigned shape and positioning of the side keys
Hinged toggle on left hand pinky keys for greater fluidity between keys
Shorter action of the octave key for a faster, more positive feel
3. Aesthetics:
Yes these elements are 'just for show' but it's the fine details that have always set Selmer apart.
Finished in a dark gold lacquer akin to vintage models
Newly designed key guards
New bow reinforcement section
Beautiful new engraving on bell and sections of body
Exclusively designed case by specialists BAM
Each Selmer Supreme comes complete with a case, concept mouthpiece (lig & cap), leather neck strap and special silk/microfiber cloth for cleaning the outside. Selmer also include a body swab, neck swab and cork grease.
Selmer Supreme Goals
The team at Selmer set out with 5 key goals for the Supreme:
To make an Alto Saxophone whose smallest details have been precisely considered to position the Supreme as the most accomplished model ever made.
To revitalise their model offering after the release of the Reference model back in 2003
To reaffirm the position of Selmer Paris as a world leader in the design, innovation and manufacture of professional Saxophones
To arouse a musicians desire to own a new Selmer Saxophone
To renew and elevate the discourse, by placing it above musical genres

Selmer Supreme - Alto Sax Reviews

This is a magnificent horn, unlike any alto I have ever played in 64 years. The tuning is as accurate as it will ever be with a conical bore instrument, & the balance between registers is superb. However, it will take some getting used to, since I have been playing a mk6 for many years!

These are amazing Sax’s and would highly recommend them to any enthusiast, well worth the price tag. Try one for yourself.

THE BEST ALTO SO FAR THAT I HAVE PLAYED.

This is truly a new generation of Sax and a huge leap forward in design and playability. I have been playing on a 1963 Mk VI as my main go to sax, mainly for the sound. I have owned many good Sax\'s from a Yamaha 875EX custom alto to Yanagisawa and loads of brands and models in-between, but have always returned to my MkVI.
I can only say try this out for yourself the ergonomics in the new key layout is exceptional for reliably playing at speed. The intonation throughout is very good and amazingly in tune in the low bell keys I don\'t have to worry about low D and below tuning wise. Likewise the palm keys and altissimo speak with ease with little or no correction for tuning required.
The core sound is full and remarkably similar to MKVI\'s and vintage horns, but it is very flexible and I think mouthpiece selection will have a larger influence on the tone.
This is a very free blowing instrument and I would highly recommend it to anyone, and I would even say I would suggest this sax over a vintage horn, as this is everything a six is and bucket loads more.
This sax has freed me from worrying about playing in tune allowing me to focus on the music. I also purchased this sax for my wife and the intonation between the two sax\'s is amazing unison sounds like one instrument even in the palm keys so that old joke of semitone being two alto\'s playing in unison is now dead.
This Sax is Supreme by name and Supreme in deed, so now go and try one for yourself.
