The newest development from Selmer, Paris is the flagship Muse Clarinet in Bb and A. Four years in the making, this leading professional model is the culmination of the recent model developments that have brought us the Privilege, Presence and Prologue. The Muse has been developed alongside leading orchestral clarinet players from around the world.
The EVOLUTION System Explained
The Muse has exceptional response at all dynamics and benefits from a new bore design. The boldest step in the design however is the introduction of the Selmer EVOLUTION system. This combines wood and resin in the internal lining of the top bore to help resistance to cracks. This system has been developed and tested with players across the world in various climates.
The EVOLUTION system sees the interior diameter of the top joint (upper half only) enlarged in the production process, this allows for the insertion/combining of the resin into the internal bore design. This patented resin (produced from a biomass) helps seal the instrument and prevents the infiltration of humidity into the wood fibres. The shaping of the bore is still done by hand and using traditional processes.
So does this affect how it plays? The short answer seems to be no. A combination of scientific studies and blind testing demonstrate that there is no notable difference in the sound with the EVOLUTION system in place. In fact, the thermal conductivity characteristics of the resin are superior to those of ebony, and the acoustic trials done in Paris confirmed the EVOLUTION system clarinets heat up more quickly and efficiently so you can reach optimal tuning zones sooner.
Other Specifications
The Muse in A features a correction key for the low E/F tuning. This is the first time Selmer have integrated this in such a fashion. The key sits near the right hand thumb and is easily operated to lift the pitch in this problem area of the A Clarinet.
The Muse also features various top-end spec including a raised C#/G# tone hole for better tuning, a mix of Gore-tex and leather pads with resonators for longevity and clarity of tone. The adjustable thumb rest makes the instrument very comfortable and the instrument is finished off with two barrels (64mm/65mm) and supplied with the new Selmer Echo mouthpiece.
