Legendary mouthpiece maker Scott Laskey designed and manufactured his range of mouthpieces until his passing in 2018. Backun Musical Instruments acquired the Laskey company in 2019, and with all of Scott’s original designs and plenty of reverse engineering from mouthpieces loaned back by musicians. Taking advantage of Backun’s precision manufacturing CNC machines, the new tuba mouthpieces were launched.

The Tuba mouthpieces play with a thicker, richer sound with sonority and flexibility across the whole range. Much of this is down to Laskey’s iconic rim designs but every other aspect from the exterior shape, the cup designs and the throat and backbore have been carefully designed to provide the precise slotting and crisp response they are well known for.

The “Helleberg” style H cup features a straight sided cup, blended to a concave funnel shape as it enters the throat. The “Geib” G cup is a little more bowl shaped, helping to produce a brighter, more punchy sound through the range.

This European Shank model features a 1.37 degree taper and measures 15.85mm at the Top and 13.77mm at the Bottom of the shank. In our testing, we’ve found the US shank fits best with Besson instruments. The EU shank fits other models well, including Yamaha. The EU shank also tends to fit most 6/4 sized CC instruments.
