Revolutionary is not a word often associated with Trombone design, but the latest offering from Getzen in collaboration with Ian Bousfield is just that in many ways. This is the latest model which has benefitted from further enhancements in 2023.
The Latest Enhancements
Since its original release in 2013, the 4147IB Custom Reserve Tenor Trombone has become a recognised pillar of the pro Trombone market. Now, a decade later, Getzen alongside Ian Bousfield and Christian Griego, have made further developments to the instrument.
Christian Griego and Ian Bousfield met while Ian was touring in 2012 and they discussed the shortcomings of Ian's current set up. The first development was to put a narrow hand slide onto the existing 4047DS bell, making the trombone more responsive.
Once the handslide was adjusted to keep the tuning, Christian moved to the cross brace. By using a lighter material and a wider tube for comfort, they found the instrument had a wider sound. In combination with the rose brass bell, the resulting instrument had a colourful, powerful, wide sound. Perfect for Ian.
The unusual cross bracing on the bell and F attachment remove much of the tension from the design, allowing both the bell itself and the F attachment to resonate much more freely and improves the response.
Harmonic Pillar System
One of the most revolutionary features on the 4147IB trombone is the Harmonic Pillar System, which allows the player the freedom to customise how responsive the trombone is in a particular setting or acoustic. This really is a feature that needs to be tried to be believed, but the difference between an open brace, the hard and soft alloys is really remarkable. When I tested the trombone in the open shop, screwing the different alloys in changed things dramatically and a very calm, controlled trombone suddenly became a totally different, dominating and shouty animal, with the last pillar giving a sound somewhere between the two.
