Development & Design

Yamaha have been producing wind & brass instruments for many decades. Their first forays into brass band instruments were in the 1970s. At that time the production was quite generic and aiming the instruments at all markets. Since then, there has been a large focus on the brass band world in particular, especially with their Neo professional range.

What this means is that they have consulted with, and worked alongside, leading professional players in top bands around the world. For example, Katrina Marzella – Baritone soloist with the world-famous Black Dyke Band. These collaborations have elevated the Baritone and helped find it a solo voice of its own.

Model Differences

Yamaha offer three main models in their Baritone range. The YBH-301 is a beginner’s model, but it’s worth considering that a Yamaha beginner range is often the equivalent of other brands mid-range or upgrade models. It has excellent tuning across the range and a warm, rich tone that is easy to produce. Available in gold lacquer or silver plate, the YBH-301 is the perfect starting point for new Baritone Horn players. It would also do a great job for the keen adult amateur playing in a local ensemble.

Further up the range Yamaha offer two professional Baritones. For most here in the UK, the Neo YBH-831 is the model they would consider. This is a professional 3 valve Baritone specifically designed with the brass band sound in mind. Whether you are a professional soloist or advanced amateur, the Neo Baritone offers the ultimate in tuning, tone and performance.
