The Bach LR180ML 43S offers most players a bright and flexible tone with plenty of immediacy. The bell taper is different to the 37 and some players feel the 43 is punchier and more direct. This silver plated version adds another tonal characteristic due to the plating, perhaps offering more colour or complexity to the tone.
The 43 vs 37 debate is not easy to solve in words. The actual taper speed varies on the bell production and the numbers refer to the number of the mandrel used to shape the bell, not a size per se. We recommend trying a 43 and 37 version with the same spec back-to-back to get a feeling for how they differ and what might suit your ideas about projection and response.
This LR180ML model plays differently to the standard 180ML because of the body design. Bach implement a 'reverse lead-pipe' design on this LR series. This essentially means the legs of the main tuning slide sit on the outside of the lead-pipe tube which removes any disturbance in the air flow.
Some players feel this makes the instruments slightly more free blowing, we prefer to say it alters the resistance point and it depends on how much you like as feedback when you play. This design results in a lighter-weight body overall and that will also make it feel slightly brighter and punchier than the non reverse lead-pipe version.
